These tiny insects are distinguished by their habit of farming fungi within the wood of their host plants, which provides the primary nutritional source for their developing larvae.

The beetle typically infests various woody plant species, showing a preference for stressed or weakened trees. In agricultural settings, it can cause significant damage to orchard trees, especially those suffering from environmental stressors like drought, improper irrigation, or nutrient deficiency, which compromise the tree's natural defense mechanisms.

The life cycle involves the female boring into the sapwood to create gallery systems. She introduces symbiotic fungi into these tunnels, which then colonize the wood surfaces. The eggs are deposited inside these galleries, and the emerging larvae feed exclusively on the fungal growth rather than the wood fibers itself, a unique survival strategy characteristic of this genus.

Damage occurs primarily through the physical destruction of the plant's vascular system caused by the excavated tunnels. Symptoms include small, circular entry holes in the bark, fine sawdust on the trunk surface, and progressive wilting of branches. If the infestation is severe, the disruption of water and nutrient transport leads to the rapid decline and eventual death of the tree.
