Xyleborus xylographus
Description
Systematic position. Xyleborus xylographus belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are commonly known as ambrosia beetles because they cultivate specific fungi within their galleries to serve as a primary food source for their larvae.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets a wide range of fruit trees, including apple, pear, cherry, plum, and apricot trees. It also infests various deciduous hardwood trees such as oak and elm, which makes orchard management challenging when forests are located in close proximity to the agricultural zones.
Biology and life cycle. Adults hibernate within established tunnels inside the wood. During early spring, when temperatures rise, the females emerge to seek new host trees. They bore into the bark and sapwood, creating branching galleries where they inoculate the wood with fungal spores and lay their eggs. The larvae mature by grazing on the resulting fungal mats.
Damage patterns and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by the construction of tunnels that disrupt the vascular tissue (xylem) of the tree, significantly impairing water and nutrient transport. Infested trees show symptoms such as dieback, foliage wilting, and reduced vigor. Heavy infestations lead to branch mortality and, in some cases, the total death of the tree.
Control measures. Controlling Xyleborus xylographus is difficult due to their protected habitat deep inside the wood. Effective management requires maintaining tree health, as weakened trees are more susceptible to attack. Cultural practices such as immediate removal and destruction of infested branches are critical. Chemical control with registered insecticides can be effective if timed correctly with the adult flight period.
