Description
The spruce bark beetle, scientifically known as Xylechinus pilosus, is a member of the Curculionidae family and the Coleoptera order. This insect is a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly spruce, often causing localized decline in healthy and stressed forest stands.
Its primary host is the spruce tree, where the beetle finds optimal conditions for larval development within the phloem layer. By targeting the inner bark, the beetle disrupts the tree's vascular system, which can lead to the rapid deterioration of the tree's health if the infestation is severe.
The life cycle is marked by overwintering as adults, followed by a spring emergence phase. Adults construct gallery systems beneath the bark to lay eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the phloem, creating intricate patterns of feeding galleries that effectively girdle the tree and cut off nutrient flow.
Symptoms of an infestation are often subtle at first. As the larvae mature and feed, the tree's health declines significantly. Key indicators include:

- frass or boring dust at the base of the tree;
- yellowing or reddening of the needles;
- premature needle drop and branch dieback.
