Xylocleptes

Xylocleptes is a genus of beetles belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the subfamily Scolytinae (bark beetles). These insects are recognized as specialized pests that pose a significant threat to certain ornamental plants, particularly woody climbers like clematis.

The primary hosts for these beetles are plants within the Clematis genus. Unlike surface-feeding insects, Xylocleptes larvae and adults burrow directly into the stem tissue. This internal activity disrupts the vascular system, preventing water and nutrients from reaching the upper parts of the plant.

The life cycle begins with adult beetles boring into the stems to create galleries for egg-laying. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae continue the feeding process inside the woody core. This cryptic lifestyle makes them particularly resilient to external environmental factors and complicates traditional contact-based pest control.

The symptoms of an infestation include sudden wilting of stems, leaf yellowing, and eventually the death of entire branches. Growers often notice tiny holes on the stem surface accompanied by fine sawdust (frass), which indicates active gallery construction by the beetles.

Integrated management is essential for controlling Xylocleptes:

• Strict sanitation protocols, including the immediate removal and destruction of infested stems.
• Monitoring the garden for early signs of stem boring, especially during the spring flight period.
• Utilizing systemic insecticides that penetrate plant tissues to reach the larvae hidden inside.
• Promoting vigorous plant growth through proper fertilization and watering to help the host plant withstand minor pest pressure.
