Jamaica rhinoceros beetle

The Jamaica rhinoceros beetle (Xyloryctes jamaicensis) is a member of the Scarabaeidae family within the order Coleoptera. Distinguished by the large horn found on the heads of males, this beetle is a notable species within its range in North and Central America. While often found in forest ecosystems, it can occasionally become a pest in agricultural and residential landscapes.

This beetle species primarily affects hardwood trees and shrubs. Common hosts include species of ash (Fraxinus) and lilac (Syringa). The adults are known to cause damage to the root collar and base of the trunks, where they bore into the woody tissues, which can be particularly damaging to young nursery stock or newly planted trees.

The biology of Xyloryctes jamaicensis involves a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae typically reside underground and feed on decaying organic matter. However, when populations are high or organic resources are scarce, larvae may feed on the living roots of nearby trees, causing significant disruption to the plant's nutrient uptake.

The primary economic damage caused by this pest stems from the structural injury to the tree's base, which interrupts water and nutrient transport. Infested plants may show signs of yellowing leaves, crown thinning, and stunted growth. Such wounds also serve as entry points for pathogens and opportunistic wood-boring insects, further weakening the host tree's health.

Management strategies focus on habitat modification and chemical or biological intervention. Maintaining clear cultivation areas around the base of trees helps in early detection of damage. In severe infestations, soil-applied insecticides can target the larvae, while light traps during the adult flight period can reduce the number of breeding individuals. Cultural practices that keep trees vigorous are essential for long-term resistance.
