Systematic position: The black twig borer (Xylosandrus compactus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a highly invasive ambrosia beetle known for its ability to colonize a vast range of woody plants, posing a significant risk to agriculture, forestry, and urban landscapes globally.

Host range: This pest is polyphagous and infests over 200 species of trees and shrubs. Major hosts include coffee, tea, cacao, avocado, and various ornamental species such as maple, dogwood, magnolia, and oak. Its capacity to thrive in diverse climatic zones makes it a persistent threat to commercial orchards and nursery stock.

Biology and life cycle: The species exhibits a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi (ambrosia fungi). The female beetle tunnels into healthy twigs, inoculating the wood with these fungi, which then serve as the exclusive food source for the developing larvae. The life cycle is relatively rapid, enabling multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season under favorable conditions.

Damage and pest impact: Damage is characterized by the formation of galleries within the xylem, which disrupts water and nutrient transport. Infested twigs often show signs of wilting, discoloration, and subsequent death. The introduction of fungal pathogens frequently leads to twig dieback, branch breakage, and, in severe cases, the death of young or weakened trees.

Protection measures: Managing Xylosandrus compactus is challenging due to the beetle's protected life stage inside the wood. Recommended strategies include:
