Description
Xyloterinus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are classified as ambrosia beetles, meaning they have a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which they introduce into the host tree to serve as food for their larvae.
The pest primarily infests deciduous tree species such as oak, beech, maple, alder, and birch. They are most attracted to stressed, dying, or recently felled trees, although populations can occasionally attack healthy trees if the environmental conditions cause significant physiological stress to the host.
The lifecycle involves the female boring a gallery into the wood, where she introduces fungal spores. Unlike true wood-borers, the larvae do not consume wood tissue; instead, they graze on the fungal mycelium growing on the walls of the gallery system. Each larva develops in a separate, specialized cell excavated by the mother.
Damage is characterized by small, circular entry holes (1–2 mm in diameter) on the bark surface. Fine wood dust often accumulates at the entrance. Internally, the wood is riddled with galleries stained by fungal activity, which significantly degrades the timber's quality and market value, making it unsuitable for high-end woodwork.
Control measures rely heavily on silvicultural practices, specifically the rapid removal of infested and downed timber before the new generation of adults emerges. Chemical control is limited but may involve applying contact insecticides to the trunks during peak flight periods, while pheromone traps are primarily used for population monitoring.
