Description
The shiny wood-boring beetle (Xyloterinus politus) is a species of bark beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family. Known as an ambrosia beetle, this insect is distinguished by its unique symbiotic relationship with fungi, which it introduces into the wood to provide a food source for its developing larvae.
This pest targets a wide variety of hardwood trees, including American beech, oak, maple, birch, and ash. It typically infests trees that are stressed, dying, or recently felled, although it can occasionally attack seemingly healthy trees if they are under significant environmental pressure or moisture stress.
The biological cycle of Xyloterinus politus involves the female excavating deep galleries into the xylem of the host tree. During this process, the beetle inoculates the tunnel walls with fungal spores. As the fungi proliferate, they stain the wood dark, a diagnostic characteristic that often accompanies the presence of the beetle galleries within the lumber.
Infestation damage is primarily technical, as the presence of tunnels and associated fungal staining degrades the quality and market value of the timber. While it may not kill a healthy, vigorous tree instantly, the cumulative damage from successive generations can weaken the structural integrity of the wood and attract secondary wood-destroying organisms.
