Description
Systematic position. The rhinoceros beetle (Xylotrupes gideon) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species, belonging to the Dynastinae subfamily, is widely recognized as a significant agricultural pest in Southeast Asia and parts of the Pacific, where it poses a constant threat to various tree crops.
Host plants. The primary hosts of this beetle are various palm species, including coconut palms (Cocos nucifera), oil palms, and sago palms. In addition to palms, the beetle is known to infest sugarcane, rubber trees, and various fruit-bearing trees, causing varying levels of economic damage depending on the density of the beetle population.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically lay eggs in decaying wood, compost piles, or organic-rich soil. The larvae feed exclusively on decaying organic matter throughout their development, which can span several months, before transitioning into the pupal stage within the substrate.
Damage and pest status. Adult beetles are the main cause of damage. They use their strong horns to bore into the crowns of host palms to reach the soft tissues near the apical meristem. This damage leads to truncated or V-shaped leaves and, in severe cases, the destruction of the central bud, which eventually kills the tree or makes it vulnerable to secondary rot and palm weevil infestations.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:
- Sanitation: Destroying breeding sites like decaying stumps and compost heaps.
- Trapping: Deploying pheromone traps to capture adult beetles and monitor populations.
- Biological control: Introducing entomopathogenic fungi such as Metarhizium anisopliae to kill larvae in the soil.
- Manual removal: Physically extracting adults from the palm crowns when possible.
