Atkinson's planthopper (Zeoliarus atkinsoni) is a member of the Cixiidae family within the order Hemiptera. In agricultural science, this insect is recognized as a significant pest, primarily due to its role as a vector for various plant pathogens, particularly phytoplasmas, which cause devastating diseases in orchard crops.
The host range of Zeoliarus atkinsoni includes various pome and stone fruit trees, such as apples and pears. Additionally, the pest can reside on a variety of wild shrubs and grasses surrounding agricultural fields, which allows the population to persist and migrate into commercial orchards during favorable weather conditions.
The life cycle of the pest consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Nymphs typically reside in the soil or at the base of the plant, feeding on roots, which makes them difficult to monitor. Adults emerge and feed on the aerial parts of the host plants, engaging in sap-sucking activities that facilitate the transmission of systemic diseases.
