Description
Diflubenzuron is a potent active ingredient classified within the benzoylurea chemical group. It functions as an insect growth regulator (IGR) that provides highly specific control against various agricultural pests by disrupting their biological development cycles rather than acting as a direct neurotoxin.
The primary mechanism of action for diflubenzuron is the inhibition of chitin synthesis. By interfering with the enzyme systems responsible for creating the insect's exoskeleton, the substance prevents the formation of new cuticle during the molting process. Consequently, larvae fail to molt successfully and ultimately perish, which effectively suppresses pest populations.
It is widely utilized in crop protection for fruit orchards, vegetables, and field crops. It is particularly effective against lepidopteran pests, such as codling moths, leaf rollers, and various miners, as well as certain coleopteran species. Its ovicidal properties make it a strategic tool for integrated pest management (IPM) programs.
Successful application requires careful timing, as the product is most effective when applied during egg-laying or early larval stages. Because it does not provide an immediate "knockdown" effect, it is essential to monitor pest populations and apply the treatment before significant plant damage occurs due to larval feeding.
When handling diflubenzuron, safety protocols must be strictly followed to minimize environmental impact. While it shows low toxicity to mammals and birds, it is toxic to aquatic invertebrates. Therefore, spray operations must avoid drift into water sources, and users should wear appropriate personal protective equipment to prevent direct exposure.
