Diquat

Description

Diquat is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the bipyridylium chemical class. It functions as a non-selective contact herbicide and is widely used as a desiccant, designed to dry out plant tissues to facilitate harvest operations in various agricultural systems.

The mechanism of action of Diquat involves the disruption of photosynthesis in green plant tissues. Upon contact with foliage, the substance is rapidly absorbed, causing the formation of oxygen radicals. This leads to the rapid destruction of cellular membranes, resulting in immediate wilting and subsequent desiccation of the green vegetative mass.

This compound is extensively used on a variety of crops, including sunflowers, soybeans, potatoes, rapeseed, and peas. The primary objective of its application is desiccation, which involves the artificial dehydration of plant tissues to accelerate seed maturation, simplify mechanical harvesting, and reduce potential crop losses caused by adverse weather conditions.

Application requirements emphasize the importance of thorough coverage, as Diquat acts strictly through contact and does not translocate within the plant vascular system. Optimal performance is achieved when spraying during sunny conditions, as ultraviolet light enhances the chemical's effectiveness in disrupting plant cell membranes.

  • Always use personal protective equipment, including respirators and gloves.
  • Prevent spray drift onto non-target areas or adjacent sensitive crops.
  • Strictly follow the pre-harvest intervals specified in the product label.
  • Store in a secure, dry place away from food, feed, and water sources.

A key advantage of Diquat is its rapid speed of action, with visible signs of desiccation appearing just hours after application. This rapid response allows farmers to manage harvest timelines effectively, reducing the risks of fungal growth and grain spoilage when dealing with crops maturing in humid or rainy environments.
