Description
Clethodim is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the cyclohexanedione chemical class. In modern plant protection practice, it is classified as a selective systemic post-emergence herbicide designed exclusively for controlling annual and perennial grass weeds in broad-leaved crops.
The mechanism of action of clethodim is based on the inhibition of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) enzyme, which plays a key role in fatty acid synthesis. Blocking this process leads to the cessation of weed growth, tissue degradation, and subsequent death. Due to its systemic properties, the substance is rapidly absorbed by leaves and translocated throughout the plant, reaching the growing points.
The product is widely used on broad-leaved crops such as sunflowers, soybeans, sugar beets, potatoes, flax, canola, and vegetable crops. Clethodim effectively destroys problematic weeds such as couch grass, bermuda grass, barnyard grass, foxtails, wild oats, and cereal volunteers without having a negative impact on the protected crop itself.
Application specifics require careful consideration of the weed growth stage. The best effect is achieved when treating actively growing weeds at the 2 to 6 true leaf stage. To increase efficacy, specialized adjuvants are often added to the spray solution to improve the penetration of the active ingredient through the leaf cuticle.
When using clethodim, strict safety measures must be followed. It is important to prevent spray drift onto neighboring grass crops, as they are extremely sensitive to this herbicide. Operations must be carried out using personal protective equipment, and when mixing with other pesticides, preliminary testing for physical and chemical compatibility is mandatory.
