Deflation is the process of removal and transport of topsoil particles by wind, which degrades soil structure and reduces overall agricultural fertility.

This phenomenon typically occurs on dry, bare, or poorly vegetated soils exposed to strong winds. Light-textured soils, such as sands, are particularly susceptible to wind erosion when they lose their structural cohesion.

Additionally, installing windbreaks and planting cover crops are essential to physically obstruct wind flow and stabilize the soil profile.
Common errors include excessive cultivation that pulverizes the soil aggregates and failing to maintain sufficient plant cover during windy seasons. Such management practices significantly increase the risk of topsoil loss and nutrient depletion.
