Cloddiness
Cloddiness is a soil condition characterized by the presence of large clods exceeding 10 centimeters in diameter, which hinder seed germination and field uniformity.

Cloddiness occurs primarily when primary tillage is performed at improper moisture levels. Large clods prevent proper seed-to-soil contact and create large air gaps, leading to poor crop emergence and uneven growth cycles across the field.
To manage this, farmers should use packers or harrows to break down clods while the soil is still workable. Crucially, avoiding tillage when soil is too wet or too dry is the best preventive measure. A common mistake is repeated passes with heavy disks in dry conditions, which often breaks down soil aggregates too finely, leading to surface crusting later.
