Osmotic pressure

It is the physical force generated by solutes within plant cells that draws water through membranes, maintaining turgor and supporting cellular function.

Также говорят: turgor pressure, osmotic potential, osmotic stress

In agronomy, osmotic pressure governs how effectively plants absorb water from the soil profile. When soil salinity is high, the osmotic pressure gradient shifts, making it difficult for roots to extract water, often resulting in physiological drought.

Managing this pressure is essential during fertigation and nutrient application. Excessive fertilizer application increases the osmotic concentration of the soil solution, which can dehydrate root hairs and inhibit nutrient uptake.

A common error is neglecting the Electrical Conductivity (EC) of irrigation water or growing media. Monitoring these levels ensures that plants maintain optimal cell turgor, which is vital for growth and resilience under environmental stress.
