Soil profile

A vertical section of soil from the surface down to the parent material, displaying distinct layers known as horizons.

Также говорят: soil section, soil horizon sequence

Soil profile analysis is essential for agronomists to evaluate site fertility and moisture dynamics. By examining these layers, one can identify the depth of the topsoil, detect compaction zones, or find salt-affected horizons that restrict root penetration.

This evaluation is standard practice when planning orchards or planting deep-rooted crops. Crucially, one must look beyond the surface; lower horizons often dictate drainage capacity and the risk of waterlogging.

A common mistake is assessing soil quality based solely on the top few centimeters. Overlooking subsoil conditions frequently leads to inappropriate tillage depth and inefficient nutrient management.
