Pre-sowing cultivation

This is the final soil tillage operation before seeding, designed to loosen the topsoil and prepare a uniform, firm seedbed.

Также говорят: pre-seeding tillage, seedbed preparation, final seedbed preparation

The purpose of this practice is to break down soil clods, level the surface, and eliminate early weed flushes. A well-prepared seedbed ensures consistent seeding depth and rapid, uniform germination.

It should be performed immediately before planting to minimize soil moisture loss. A properly adjusted cultivator creates a firm seedbed floor, which facilitates capillary water movement to the seeds.

Common mistakes include tilling too deeply, which dries out the germination zone, or working on soil that is too wet, which leads to excessive compaction and poor soil structure.
