Solonetzic soils are characterized by a dense, clay-enriched layer that inhibits root penetration and water infiltration. High concentrations of sodium cause soil particles to disperse, leading to surface crusting and poor aeration, which severely limits crop yield potential.
The standard management practice involves chemical amendment, primarily through the application of gypsum. The calcium in gypsum replaces sodium in the soil complex, allowing for the leaching of salts and the gradual restoration of a stable, crumbly soil structure.
A common mistake in managing these soils is applying amendments without prior laboratory testing. Relying on generic application rates without considering the specific sodium adsorption ratio can lead to ineffective reclamation or chemical imbalances in the root zone.
