Soil thixotropy

The property of certain moist soils to temporarily lose shear strength and transition from a solid state to a liquid-like state under mechanical stress.

This phenomenon is crucial when managing heavy clay soils prone to liquefaction during high moisture conditions. In agronomy, thixotropy dictates field trafficability and the soil's ability to support the weight of heavy machinery such as tractors and harvesters.

Practical application involves selecting the optimal time for field operations. When soil exhibits thixotropic behavior, it loses its load-bearing capacity, leading to severe rutting, destruction of soil aggregates, and the compaction of the subsoil layer.

A common mistake is entering the field immediately after heavy rains, when the soil may appear stable but turns into a viscous mass under mechanical impact. This causes loss of soil structure, reduced aeration, and ultimately, decreased crop yields.
