Practical methods include contour farming, the establishment of vegetative buffer strips, and the adoption of no-till or reduced tillage practices. Maintaining ground cover with crop residues significantly increases water infiltration and reduces the kinetic energy of raindrops.
A common mistake is tilling up and down the slope, which creates pathways for runoff and accelerates soil loss. Additionally, overgrazing or leaving fields bare during wet seasons leaves the topsoil vulnerable to being washed away, leading to long-term site degradation.
