The origin of this species is broadly Holarctic, with populations distributed across temperate zones of Europe, Asia, and North America. It naturally thrives in moist, shaded environments, frequently occupying niches such as wet stream banks, shaded limestone cliffs, and the bases of trees. Its high adaptability to varying moisture levels is a key ecological trait.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its compact, delicate fronds. The leaves are arranged in two distinct rows, creating a flattened, wing-like appearance. It spreads via creeping protonemata, allowing it to colonize surfaces effectively. This vegetative growth pattern is the primary method used for its propagation in commercial greenhouse environments.

Cultivation requirements involve maintaining high humidity (above 75%) and providing indirect, soft lighting. In terms of substrates, Fissidens viridulus prefers porous media like volcanic rock, specialized aquatic soil, or wood, which provide sufficient anchorage for its rhizoids.
