The natural distribution area of this species encompasses the arid regions of South Africa, specifically within the Cape Province. In its native habitat, the plant typically grows in rocky crevices or under the protection of larger shrubs, which has shaped its evolutionary adaptations to semi-shaded environments and efficient moisture conservation within mineral-rich, rocky soils.
Botanically, the plant forms a low-growing rosette of fleshy, succulent leaves. The leaves are characterized by a distinct swollen shape—the source of its specific epithet turgida—and can exhibit color shifts from light green to reddish-brown when exposed to higher light intensity. The margins of the leaves often feature soft teeth or cilia, which enhance the plant's decorative value.
