Mountain hydrangea

The Mountain hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family. Known for its graceful habit and smaller stature compared to the common mophead hydrangeas, it is a prized specimen for temperate gardens, typically reaching heights of 1 to 1.5 meters.

The species is native to mountainous regions of Japan and Korea. It thrives in cool, moist forest environments, which dictates its preference for shaded or semi-shaded locations in cultivation. Its wide natural distribution in Asia has led to the development of numerous cultivars favored for their increased cold hardiness and distinct floral displays.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by thin, elegant branches and foliage that often turns bronze or reddish-purple in autumn. The flowers are arranged in delicate lacecap inflorescences, where small fertile florets in the center are surrounded by larger, showy sterile florets. Similar to other species, the color of the petals is pH-dependent, ranging from sky blue in acidic soil to pink in neutral soil.

Successful cultivation requires soil that is rich in organic matter and consistently moist. Unlike some other shrubs, Mountain hydrangea demands protection from the harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch its leaves. Regular fertilization with balanced, slow-release formulas and the application of ericaceous fertilizers are recommended to maintain plant vigor and encourage consistent flowering.

Disease management is a crucial part of hydrangea maintenance. The plant can be susceptible to fungal infections like powdery mildew, particularly when airflow is restricted. Common pests include aphids and mites, which can be managed with horticultural soaps or oil sprays. Routine pruning, performed immediately after flowering, helps maintain shape and ensures the plant remains productive for the following year.
