Field mint

Field mint (lat. Mentha arvensis L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is widely cultivated globally for its essential oil, which is a major commercial source of natural menthol. While it is native to the temperate regions of Europe and Asia, it has been introduced to various parts of the world due to its high economic value.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by square stems, opposite leaves with serrated margins, and a creeping rhizome system that allows for aggressive spreading. It thrives in damp environments, frequently appearing in wetlands, marshes, and riverbanks. In agricultural settings, it requires high soil fertility and consistent moisture levels to produce optimal foliage biomass.

Agricultural requirements for field mint focus on maintaining soil structure and moisture availability. It is typically propagated through rhizome cuttings, as this method ensures the uniformity of the crop. Cultivation techniques include regular weeding and managed irrigation. The plant performs best in soils with high organic matter content and a pH range between 6.0 and 7.5, ensuring vigorous root and shoot development.
