The species originates from the limestone slopes of Mexico, where it has evolved to thrive in nutrient-poor environments. Its natural habitat is characterized by high humidity and consistent moisture, which has dictated the specific requirements for its cultivation in modern horticultural settings.

Botanically, the plant is recognized by its succulent, pale green leaves arranged in a basal rosette. The leaves are covered in sticky glandular hairs that secrete a mucilaginous substance, which serves to trap small insects.
