Apple chlorotic leaf spot is a significant plant disease caused by the Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), a member of the Trichovirus genus. This virus is widespread globally and poses a serious threat to the productivity of pome and stone fruit orchards, specifically affecting apple, pear, quince, plum, and cherry trees.
The virus is characterized by its ability to cause latent infections, meaning that trees can carry and spread the virus without displaying any immediate symptoms. This latent nature makes early detection extremely difficult, allowing the virus to persist in nurseries and orchards for extended periods before becoming apparent in highly susceptible cultivars.
Symptoms of the infection can manifest in various ways, ranging from chlorotic spots, streaks, and mosaic patterns on the leaves to the deformation of leaf blades. In some varieties, the infection can also lead to reduced fruit size, irregular shape, and the development of necrotic pits on the skin of the fruit, significantly impacting the commercial quality of the harvest.
The primary route of transmission is through the propagation process, particularly via infected budwood or rootstocks. While certain aphid species may contribute to the spread of the virus in some conditions, the most frequent method of transmission within established orchards is through pruning tools and saws that have not been adequately sterilized between different trees.
Management of Apple chlorotic leaf spot relies entirely on rigorous preventive practices, as there are no chemical treatments available to eliminate the virus from already infected trees. Producers should prioritize the use of virus-indexed certified planting material, implement strict sanitation protocols for pruning tools, and monitor orchards for any signs of leaf abnormalities to manage the spread of the disease effectively.
