Description

Apple chlorotic leaf spot is caused by the Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), a member of the genus Trichovirus and the family Betaflexiviridae. This pathogen is a widespread virus that infects many fruit-bearing species, particularly within the Rosaceae family, including apples, pears, and stone fruits.

Symptoms of the infection can vary significantly depending on the cultivar and environmental conditions. Common indicators include yellow spots, chlorotic rings, lines on the leaves, and sometimes leaf distortion. In many cases, the virus remains latent, meaning the tree shows no visible symptoms while still acting as an active source of infection for other trees.

The biology of the virus relies on sap transmission and mechanical transmission. In orchards, the most common way for the disease to spread is through the use of infected propagation material such as scions and rootstocks. While some studies suggest insect transmission, the primary vector for widespread outbreaks remains poor nursery hygiene.

Environmental factors do not directly generate the virus, but they influence the tree's susceptibility to stress, which can aggravate the expression of symptoms. Once a tree is infected, the virus becomes systemic and moves through the plant's phloem, making it impossible to eradicate using conventional chemical pesticides.

The economic impact of this virus is significant, as it leads to reduced fruit quality, decreased tree vigor, and eventual loss of the entire plant. Effective management relies strictly on proactive measures rather than curative treatments:

  • Sourcing certified, virus-tested nursery stock for new plantings.
  • Implementing strict sanitation protocols for pruning tools (e.g., sterilization).
  • Rouging out and destroying symptomatic or known-infected trees to prevent further spread.
  • Managing orchard pests that could potentially serve as vectors for sap-borne pathogens.
