Description
Beet western yellows is a serious viral disease caused by the Beet western yellows virus (BWYV), a member of the Polerovirus genus. This virus is phloem-limited, meaning it restricts the transport of sugars and nutrients within the plant, which leads to stunted growth and significant agricultural losses.
The host range of this pathogen is extensive, affecting a variety of economically important crops including fodder beet, sugar beet, soybeans, garden spinach, lettuce, and sweet pepper. Additionally, numerous wild weeds act as reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the field environment throughout the year.
Symptoms typically manifest as yellowing of the older leaves, starting at the leaf margins and moving inward. The leaf tissue becomes thick, leathery, and brittle, while the leaf veins often remain green. These symptoms are frequently confused with nutrient deficiencies, but they lead to reduced yields in root crops and poor quality in leafy vegetables.
Transmission is exclusively carried out by aphids, with Myzus persicae (green peach aphid) being the most efficient vector. The virus is transmitted in a persistent manner, meaning the aphid remains infectious after acquiring the virus from an infected host. Favorable conditions for the spread include mild winters and springs that support large aphid populations.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is the only effective way to combat this disease. Key strategies include the application of insecticides to control aphid populations, the removal of weed hosts in and around fields, and the selection of virus-tolerant varieties. Sanitation practices, such as clearing crop residues, are also essential to minimize the inoculum pressure for the next season.
