Description

Beet western yellows virus (BWYV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Polerovirus within the family Solemoviridae. This virus is responsible for widespread agricultural losses, affecting a broad range of host plants, most notably sugar beet, oilseed rape, and various vegetable crops, by inducing systemic chlorosis and stunting.

The primary symptoms of infection include interveinal yellowing of older and middle leaves. As the disease progresses, the leaves often become brittle, thickened, and may display purplish or reddish discoloration. This severe physiological stress significantly inhibits photosynthesis, leading to reduced root weight, diminished sugar content in beets, and poor quality of leafy greens, directly impacting marketability.

The biological cycle of BWYV is dependent on aphid vectors, with the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) being the most efficient carrier. Transmission is persistent, meaning the virus enters the aphid's salivary glands after it feeds on an infected plant, allowing the insect to remain infectious for the remainder of its life. The virus does not propagate within the seed or soil, making aphid migration the sole mechanism for field-to-field spread.

Disease prevalence is heavily influenced by environmental factors that favor aphid proliferation, particularly mild winters and warm, dry springs. Weeds belonging to the Brassicaceae and Chenopodiaceae families serve as critical overwintering reservoirs for the virus. When aphids emerge from these reservoirs, they carry the virus into agricultural fields, initiating primary infections that subsequently spread through secondary transmissions within the crop.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach to pest and disease control:

  • Rigorous monitoring and timely application of insecticides to control aphid populations.
  • Elimination of reservoir weed species in field margins and surrounding areas.
  • Adopting appropriate planting dates to avoid the peak flight periods of migratory aphids.
  • Use of certified, virus-free planting material and resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
  • Implementation of robust crop rotation schemes to prevent the buildup of pathogen sources.
