Description

Causal agent and disease type. The fungus Laetiporus sulphureus, commonly known as the Chicken of the Woods, is the causative agent of brown cubical rot. It is a potent wood-decay pathogen that targets cellulose within the woody tissues of host trees, leaving the lignin behind, which results in the characteristic brittle, cubed wood texture often found in advanced stages of decay.

Host range. While primarily associated with broadleaf trees, the fungus also infects coniferous species, including the Douglas Fir. The fungus acts as a wound parasite, entering trees through broken branches, fire scars, or root damage, where it initiates its destructive colonization of the heartwood or sapwood, depending on the specific tree species.

Symptoms and signs. The most recognizable signs are the large, bright sulfur-yellow to orange fan-shaped fruiting bodies that emerge from the trunk or roots. Internally, the wood loses its structural integrity, changes color to a reddish-brown hue, and eventually crumbles into distinct cubical fragments when dried, confirming a severe state of rot.

Conditions for development:

  • High humidity levels facilitating spore germination.
  • Presence of unhealed wounds or bark injuries.
  • Environmental stress affecting the tree's defense mechanisms.
  • Moderate ambient temperatures that favor mycelial expansion.

Impact and management. This fungus significantly reduces the strength of timber, turning trees into structural hazards. Effective management involves rigorous monitoring for fruiting bodies, timely pruning of decayed branches, the application of protective coatings to wounds, and the removal of severely infected trees to prevent the spread of spores to healthy specimens in the immediate vicinity.
