Chicken of the woods

Taxonomic position: Laetiporus sulphureus, commonly known as Chicken of the Woods, is a species of bracket fungus in the Fomitopsidaceae family. It is a parasitic and saprophytic fungus acting as a destructive plant pathogen that causes significant heart rot in various tree species.

Diseases and host plants: This fungus is the primary agent of brown cubical rot. It predominantly attacks broad-leaved deciduous trees such as oak, cherry, willow, and various fruit-bearing orchard trees like apple and pear. By degrading cellulose, it leaves the tree structurally unsound, significantly increasing the risk of mechanical failure.

Biology and life cycle: The infection occurs primarily through wounds, broken branches, or pruning cuts. The fungus colonizes the internal tissues, extracting nutrients and causing the heartwood to become brittle. During the growth season, it produces bright, sulfur-yellow shelf-like fruiting bodies that release microscopic spores, which are then dispersed by wind and rain to infect new host trees.

Conditions and pathogenicity: Pathogenicity is enhanced in conditions of high humidity and poor aeration. The fungus thrives in stagnant air near bark injuries. Its economic impact is severe as it degrades the mechanical strength of the timber, turning the wood into a dry, crumbling mass. Heavily infected trees often suffer from wind-throw, as the root or trunk system is completely compromised.

Control and prevention: Managing Laetiporus sulphureus requires proactive maintenance:

• Regular inspection of trees for any signs of fruiting bodies.
• Proper pruning techniques to minimize open wounds that could act as entry points for spores.
• Use of protective wound sealants on larger cuts to prevent fungal colonization.
• Prompt removal and safe disposal of heavily infested trees or wood debris to limit the spread of spores within the orchard.
