Candida glabrata is a yeast-like fungus that, within the agricultural landscape, typically acts as a spoilage agent. While recognized primarily in biological sciences, its presence on agricultural produce can lead to significant post-harvest losses, particularly in high-sugar fruit and vegetable crops.
The pathogen is a member of the ascomycetes yeast family. In the field or storage facilities, it functions as an opportunistic organism, capitalizing on existing physiological stress or mechanical damage to host plant tissues to initiate its metabolic activity and colonization.
Crops most susceptible to its presence include stone fruits, grapes, and various vegetables with high moisture and sugar content. The yeast relies on the availability of simple sugars, which are exposed when the protective epidermal layers of the fruit are compromised by weather, pests, or improper handling.
Symptoms of infection are characterized by tissue softening, the emergence of a fermentation odor, and the development of microscopic yeast colonies appearing as a light-colored film on the surface. These signs are often accompanied by the rapid degradation of internal cellular structures, leading to total decay of the affected parts.
Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) to prevent primary damage to the fruit. Prophylaxis involves careful harvesting techniques, proper sanitation of storage areas to reduce inoculum pressure, and maintaining cool-chain logistics to prevent the proliferation of yeast populations during transport and distribution.
