Corky root rot, caused by fungi of the genus Xylaria, is a soil-borne plant disease that affects the root systems of various crops. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is particularly susceptible to this pathogen. The infection leads to the destruction of the outer layers of the roots, which gradually impairs the plant's ability to transport water and essential nutrients.

The causative agent belongs to the Ascomycetes group. The fungus typically produces stromatic fruiting bodies that appear as dark or blackened, wood-like structures. These structures are highly resistant to environmental stress and allow the pathogen to persist in the soil for extended periods, even in the absence of a host crop.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the degradation of root tissues. The epidermis of the root turns dark and becomes "corky" or brittle, easily peeling away from the central core. In later stages, the plants exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and general wilting, as the compromised root system can no longer sustain the plant during stress periods.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by soil conditions. Poor drainage, compacted soil layers, and excessive moisture are primary factors that favor the spread and activity of Xylaria. The disease spreads mechanically through infested soil movement and the use of contaminated agricultural tools, which can introduce the fungus into previously healthy fields.

The economic impact is significant, as it leads to thinning stands of alfalfa and reduced biomass production. Prevention and control strategies focus on integrated management: ensuring proper soil drainage, practicing appropriate crop rotation, and maintaining soil health. Avoiding over-irrigation and managing field sanitation are critical to minimizing the risk of outbreaks and ensuring crop longevity.
