Crater rot

Crater rot is a destructive plant disease caused by the fungus Myrothecium roridum. This pathogen is known to attack a wide variety of plant species, including major vegetables like watermelons, as well as various ornamental crops. It is characterized by its ability to spread rapidly in humid environments, causing significant damage to plant tissues.

The primary symptoms of the infection include necrotic lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits, which often exhibit a distinct crater-like depression. Under high humidity, the centers of these lesions become covered in white or greenish masses of fungal spores. As the disease progresses, the plant tissues dry out and collapse, leading to stunted growth, premature leaf drop, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire plant.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental factors, primarily high humidity and warm temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. The pathogen survives in the soil and on crop debris, making it a persistent threat in agricultural lands. Spores can be easily disseminated via water splashing, contaminated tools, or even through insect vectors in some scenarios.

The economic impact of crater rot can be severe, especially in watermelon production. By damaging the vascular tissues and leaf area, the fungus significantly reduces the plant's ability to produce sugars and develop healthy fruit. Yield losses can be substantial if management practices are not strictly implemented during the early stages of the disease development.

Integrated pest management is the most effective strategy for controlling this fungus. This includes the removal of infected plant parts, crop rotation, and the application of fungicides when conditions are favorable for disease outbreaks.

• Improve airflow in greenhouses to reduce canopy humidity.

• Use certified disease-free seeds and seedlings.
