Myrothecium roridum is a soil-borne fungus belonging to the genus Myrothecium, which is known as a severe plant pathogen. This fungus is widely recognized for its ability to produce toxic secondary metabolites, particularly macrocyclic trichothecenes, which cause systemic toxicity in affected plants, leading to rapid cell death and tissue necrosis.

The disease caused by this pathogen is often referred to as Myrothecium leaf spot or crown rot. It affects a vast array of hosts, including economically important crops like soybeans, cotton, melons, and various floricultural species such as pansies and impatiens. The symptoms are characterized by circular or irregular necrotic spots that frequently exhibit concentric rings, eventually becoming covered with white mycelial growth and characteristic black spore-producing structures.

The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by the production of conidia that are easily dispersed by water splash, wind, or contaminated tools. The fungus remains dormant in the soil or in infected plant debris as mycelium or chlamydospores, waiting for favorable conditions. These conditions are usually defined by high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures, which trigger germination and subsequent host infection.

The economic impact of Myrothecium roridum is significant, particularly in greenhouses and nurseries. Severe infestations cause leaf blight, wilting, and plant death, which can lead to total crop loss if not managed early. Because the fungus is opportunistic and persistent, it can easily overcome plants weakened by environmental stress or poor sanitation.

  • Use well-draining potting media to prevent water stagnation.
