Endomycosis

Endomycosis is a fungal plant disease caused by the Endomyces genus. As a type of ascomycete fungus, it affects various plant species, attacking their internal tissues and disrupting metabolic pathways. The pathogen often acts as an opportunistic invader that exploits plant stress, leading to tissue decay and significant loss of biomass or yield.

A wide range of crops is susceptible to this disease, including fruit trees, berry bushes, and various vegetables. In some cases, ornamental plants can also be affected, leading to aesthetic damage and decline of the overall stand. The pathogen is particularly aggressive during periods of active plant growth and reproductive development.

Typical symptoms include the formation of necrotic spots, fuzzy mycelial growth, and tissue softening or discolouration. In many instances, the infected parts of the plant undergo a rotting process, resulting in the softening of fruits or stems. Affected tissues often become hypersensitive, leading to wilting and premature shedding of blossoms or immature fruits.

The development and spread of the fungus are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The spores are typically dispersed by wind, water splashes, and physical contact with contaminated tools or equipment. Dense canopy structures and poor air circulation in greenhouses create an ideal microclimate for the fungus to thrive.

The economic impact of endomycosis is significant, as it leads to both quantitative yield loss and qualitative degradation of crops. Infected produce often fails to meet market standards for storage life and appearance. Effective management strategies include:

• Strict field sanitation and removal of infected plant debris.
• Crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle in the soil.
• Application of targeted fungicides during high-risk periods.
• Improving air circulation through proper pruning and spacing.
