Eurotium

Eurotium is a genus of fungi that serves as the teleomorphic (sexual) stage of various species within the Aspergillus genus. In agronomy, these fungi are recognized as primary storage pathogens, notorious for causing significant deterioration of stored agricultural commodities, including cereals, oilseeds, and processed plant materials.

The fungus affects a wide variety of crops such as wheat, corn, rice, and legumes. While it can occur in the field under high humidity conditions before harvest, the most significant damage typically happens during storage. Eurotium species are known for their ability to thrive in the stored environment, penetrating the seed coat and consuming the starchy endosperm.

Symptoms of an infection include a distinct color change in the seeds, typically showing green, yellow, or grayish fungal colonies on the surface. In heavily infested grain, the mass may become matted due to mycelial growth. Infected lots often exhibit a pungent, musty odor and show a drastic decline in germination rates and nutritional quality.

The development of Eurotium is heavily dependent on the moisture content of the stored material. As a xerophilic organism, it can grow at lower water activity levels compared to other storage molds. Consequently, warm and humid conditions within silos or warehouses act as major accelerators for the rapid spread of the pathogen through the entire grain heap.

Effective management strategies center on strict post-harvest hygiene and environmental control. Keeping grain moisture levels below the critical threshold, ensuring adequate aeration, and maintaining low temperatures are essential. Regular inspection and the use of chemical preservatives or antifungal treatments for seed grain are necessary measures to prevent catastrophic losses and the production of harmful mycotoxins.
