Description

Jelly end rot is a non-infectious physiological disorder that affects potato tubers, often linked to the improper translocation of carbohydrates. Unlike pathogenic diseases caused by fungi or bacteria, this condition arises from environmental stresses that disrupt the normal metabolic processes within the plant.

The primary crop affected is the potato. Symptoms typically appear at the stem end of the tuber, where the flesh becomes soft, translucent, or jelly-like. Over time, these areas may turn brown, collapse, and eventually dry out, resulting in a firm, necrotic, or hollowed-out section of the tuber.

The development of this disorder is heavily influenced by high soil temperatures and moisture stress during the tuber initiation and bulking stages. When the plant suffers from heat or drought, the mobilization of starch is impaired, causing a redistribution of sugars that leads to the degradation of tissue at the stem end.

Economically, Jelly end rot is highly damaging as it significantly reduces the marketability of the harvest. Affected tubers are prone to rapid breakdown in storage and are entirely unsuitable for commercial use, including processing into chips or french fries, due to the inferior quality of the internal flesh.

Effective prevention strategies focus on maintaining consistent soil moisture levels throughout the growing season. Management techniques should include:

  • Irrigation scheduling to prevent moisture stress during heat waves.
  • Use of mulching to keep soil temperatures lower.
  • Selecting potato varieties known for better tolerance to heat.
  • Balanced fertilization, ensuring adequate calcium availability to support cell wall stability.
