Description
Laminated root rot, caused by the fungus Phellinus weirii (now classified as Coniferiporia weirii), is one of the most destructive diseases affecting coniferous forests. The fungus primarily targets the root system, causing severe decay that eventually leads to the structural failure of the tree.
The disease is particularly devastating to Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), although it also infects mountain hemlock, true firs, and spruce. The pathogen persists in soil-borne stumps and root fragments for many years, acting as a perennial reservoir for new infections in regenerating stands.
Symptoms of the disease are often progressive and include crown thinning, needle yellowing, and stunted terminal growth. A diagnostic feature found in affected roots and the lower trunk is the delamination (separation) of wood along the annual growth rings, accompanied by distinct white, crust-like mycelial mats.
The spread of the fungus occurs primarily through root-to-root contact as trees grow together. The mycelium grows along the surface of the roots and colonizes the roots of healthy, adjacent trees upon physical contact. Soil moisture levels significantly influence the vigor and infection rate of the mycelial network.
Management and prevention focus on reducing the spread of the pathogen. Strategies include stump removal in heavily infected areas, planting resistant tree species (such as deciduous hardwoods) in disease centers, and establishing buffer zones to isolate infected patches from healthy stands, effectively breaking the root contact cycle.
