Rugose mosaic

Description

Rugose mosaic is a significant viral disease primarily caused by the Potato virus Y (PVY) or related potyviruses. This pathogen systemically infects plant tissues, disrupting vital physiological functions such as photosynthesis and nutrient translocation, ultimately leading to substantial economic losses in agricultural fields.

This disease primarily affects Solanaceous crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, and tobacco. The virus can infect plants at any growth stage, and once established, it becomes a permanent part of the plant’s biological system, significantly reducing the quality and quantity of the harvest.

The characteristic symptoms of rugose mosaic include severe crinkling and leaf puckering, often accompanied by a distinct mosaic pattern of yellow-green and dark green patches. The leaves may become distorted, brittle, and stunted. As the infection progresses, affected plants show significant reduction in biomass, leaf necrosis, and premature defoliation, which severely limits the development of fruits or tubers.

Transmission occurs primarily through insect vectors, such as aphids, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant tissues and transfer it to healthy ones. Additionally, mechanical transmission is possible through contaminated gardening tools, machinery, or even physical contact between neighboring plants in the field. Environmental factors like warm temperatures and high aphid populations accelerate the spread of the disease.

Integrated management is the most effective approach to control rugose mosaic. This includes planting certified virus-free seeds or tubers and selecting resistant varieties. Regular scouting for insect vectors and prompt application of insecticides are crucial. Furthermore, all infected plants should be promptly rogued (removed and destroyed) to eliminate the source of inoculum and protect the remaining healthy crops.

  • Strict weed control to remove alternative hosts.
  • Sanitization of tools using effective disinfectants.
  • Spatial isolation of seed production plots.
  • Use of reflective mulches to deter aphids.
