As a specialized pathogen within the Phytophthora genus, it primarily focuses on foliage, leading to rapid tissue necrosis and significant physiological stress for the host plant. The infection targets a variety of woody and shrub species. Typical symptoms begin as localized, water-soaked spots on leaves that subsequently develop into dark brown or black necrotic lesions. In cases of high humidity, a sparse, whitish growth of sporangia may appear on the undersides of leaves, signaling the active stage of fungal development and potential for further spread.

The development of this disease is heavily influenced by moisture availability. Optimal conditions for infection involve moderate temperatures and sustained periods of leaf wetness. Because the pathogen produces motile zoospores, water films on the leaf surface or splashing rain are crucial for the dissemination of the inoculum from the primary infection site to healthy tissues nearby.

The harmfulness of this disease is characterized by premature leaf drop, which stunts the plant’s growth and reduces its ability to store energy for subsequent growth cycles. In commercial nurseries, Phytophthora foliorum can cause substantial economic losses due to the mass destruction of seedlings and the high costs associated with rigorous treatment or plant disposal required to halt the spread.
