The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Comoclathris pentamera (formerly classified as Platyspora pentamera). It is a fungal pathogen that primarily attacks the foliage of small grain cereals, leading to the development of necrotic spots that limit the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
The disease is most commonly found infecting winter wheat crops. The pathogen survives the winter in the form of mycelium or fruiting bodies located on crop debris, which acts as the primary reservoir for infection in the subsequent spring growing cycle.
Symptoms are characterized by the appearance of oval or irregular spots on leaves, often exhibiting varying shades of brown, yellow, or grey. As the lesions expand, they may coalesce, leading to significant chlorosis and eventual necrosis of the entire leaf blade if conditions remain favorable for the fungus.
The development and dispersal of the fungus are favored by cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity levels. Frequent rainfall and extended periods of leaf wetness significantly increase the rate of secondary infection, as water droplets facilitate the spread of spores throughout the crop canopy.
