Pleospora trichostoma is a species of fungus in the family Pleosporaceae, recognized as a plant pathogen. In its life cycle, it is the teleomorph of the fungus Alternaria trichostoma. It belongs to the Ascomycota division and is widely distributed in regions where cereals are cultivated, acting as an agent of various leaf spot diseases.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include major cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and rye, as well as various wild grass species. The fungus infects the leaves, stems, and leaf sheaths. Initial symptoms appear as small brown spots that gradually enlarge, often causing chlorosis and necrotic lesions that significantly reduce the green leaf area.

The biology of Pleospora trichostoma is characterized by its ability to overwinter on crop debris as perithecia. With the arrival of favorable weather conditions in spring, ascospores are released and spread by wind or rain splash, infecting young seedlings. Subsequent cycles are driven by conidia production, which allows for rapid pathogen spread during the growing season.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, dew, and moderate temperatures are critical for the spread of this fungus. Stagnant moisture and high plant density are common factors that exacerbate the severity of the infection. Under favorable conditions, the pathogen can quickly colonize the canopy, especially during the grain-filling stages when the crop is most vulnerable.

Economic damage is caused by reduced photosynthetic capacity, which directly results in lower grain yield and poor quality. Effective control measures rely on a combination of strategies:

  • crop rotation to reduce soil inoculum,
  • the use of resistant cultivars,
  • proper management of crop residues,
  • application of appropriate fungicides during peak risk periods.
