The oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) is a wood-decaying fungus that, while edible, acts as a dangerous pathogen in orchards and forestry. It is known to cause white rot, a condition that degrades the structural integrity of woody plants by breaking down both lignin and cellulose within the host's trunk.
This fungus typically targets deciduous trees, including apple, pear, poplar, and willow. The infection process begins when fungal spores enter the tree through open wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks in the bark. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the heartwood, weakening the tree from the inside out.
