As an epilithic organism, this species primarily colonizes rocks, limestone, and mineral surfaces. Unlike true plant pathogens such as fungi causing rusts or mildews, Protoblastenia rupestris does not extract nutrients from the host plant, meaning it poses no biological threat to the productivity or survival of agricultural crops.
