Often referred to as a water mold, this organism thrives in moist environments and persists in the soil through thick-walled oospores, which allow it to survive adverse conditions for extended periods of time.
This pathogen has a remarkably broad host range, affecting a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural crops including cereals, legumes, and vegetables. It primarily targets germinating seeds and young seedlings, often causing severe damping-off, which results in significant stand losses before the seedlings even emerge from the soil.
