Raspberry yellow spot

Raspberry yellow spot is a viral disease caused by the Raspberry yellow spot virus (RYSV). It is a systemic infection that compromises the plant's health, leading to diminished vigor and reduced berry yield in affected raspberry plantations.

The primary host for this virus is the red raspberry (Rubus idaeus). The disease is distributed globally and poses a significant challenge for berry growers, as it can be easily introduced into new fields through infected nursery stock.

Symptoms of the disease are most prominent on the foliage. Infected leaves exhibit irregular yellow spots or mottling. In advanced stages, these spots may coalesce, causing leaf yellowing, stunting of the new canes, and general decline in plant vitality, which ultimately impacts the total fruit production of the bush.

The virus is primarily transmitted by aphids, which act as vectors. When aphids feed on infected plants, they acquire the virus and subsequently transmit it to healthy bushes. Additionally, the propagation of raspberry using cuttings from symptomatic plants is a major factor in the widespread distribution of the virus.

Management of Raspberry yellow spot relies heavily on preventative strategies since there is no cure for the virus. Key practices include sourcing certified virus-free planting materials, maintaining rigorous aphid control programs, and practicing strict sanitation, which involves the immediate roguing and destruction of any infected plants identified in the field.
