Description

Raspberry vein chlorosis virus (RVCV) is a significant plant pathogen that primarily affects plants within the Rubus genus. This virus belongs to the group of plant pathogens that colonize the phloem tissues, causing physiological stress and disrupting the normal transport of nutrients. It is a widespread issue that poses a risk to both commercial raspberry production and home gardening.

The primary symptom of this infection is the chlorosis of leaf veins. As the disease progresses, the veins become distinctively yellow, creating a network-like pattern across the leaf surface. In severe cases, this chlorosis can lead to leaf distortion, premature leaf senescence, and a significant reduction in fruit yield. The plant loses vigor and becomes more susceptible to other biotic and abiotic stresses.

The biology of RVCV is closely linked to its vector, the large raspberry aphid (Aphis idaei). The aphid acquires the virus by feeding on infected phloem sap. Once acquired, the virus is transmitted to healthy plants during the aphid's subsequent feeding sessions. The ability of the aphid to fly allows the virus to spread rapidly throughout a field or even to neighboring plantations.

Environmental conditions that favor aphid reproduction and migration are the primary factors in the spread of the virus. Warm and humid conditions during the spring and early summer accelerate aphid population growth, significantly increasing the risk of infection. Because the virus is systemic, it persists in the plant's vascular system, ensuring the plant remains a reservoir for the disease throughout its lifespan.

Effective management of Raspberry vein chlorosis requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize the spread of the pathogen. Key strategies include:

  • Planting only certified virus-free nursery stock to establish new fields.
  • Regular monitoring of aphid populations and timely application of insecticides.
  • Rigorous roguing of infected plants to reduce the inoculum load in the field.
  • Maintaining field hygiene by controlling weeds that may host both the aphids and the virus.
