Description
Schizophyllum rot is a plant disease caused by the basidiomycete fungus Schizophyllum commune. In agricultural contexts, it acts as a wound pathogen, primarily targeting vulnerable or damaged tissues. While typically known as a decomposer, it functions as an opportunistic parasite when environmental conditions favor its colonisation of agricultural crops.
The primary host for this fungus is sugar cane. The pathogen gains entry through wounds caused by mechanical harvesting, environmental stress, or insect borers. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deep into the stalk tissue, disrupting the physiological functions of the plant and compromising the integrity of the stem.
Symptoms of the disease include the development of internal stalk rot, which is often detected after splitting the cane. The infected tissue becomes discolored and soft. A definitive sign of the infestation is the emergence of white, fan-shaped, gilled fruiting bodies protruding through the epidermis of the host stem, which indicate the late stages of fungal colonization.
The development of the fungus is heavily influenced by high humidity and warm climates. These conditions are ideal for the rapid production and dispersal of spores via wind. Once a plantation is infected, the fungus can spread quickly, especially if the crop is already stressed or if there are numerous open wounds on the plants.
The economic impact of Schizophyllum rot is significant due to the loss of sugar content and reduced juice purity. Effective management involves a multifaceted approach, including the reduction of mechanical damage during cultivation, aggressive control of stem-boring insects, and the selection of disease-resistant varieties. Proper field sanitation is also critical to prevent long-term pathogen buildup in the soil and debris.
